Abstract (Filipino)

Sinuri ng pag-aaral na ito kung paano ginamit ng mga pahayagang tabloid na Pilipino Star Ngayon at Pang-Masa ang mga konseptuwal na metapora sa pagrepresenta sa mga aspekto at aktor ng lindol sa Bohol noong 2013, Bagyong Yolanda noong 2013, at pagputok ng Bulkang Taal noong 2020, at kung paano maaaring magtaguyod o humadlang ang mga ito sa epektibo, inklusibo, makatao, at responsableng komunikasyong pangkalamidad. Ginamit ng pag-aaral ang Conceptual Metaphor Theory sa pagtukoy at pagsusuri ng mga metaporikong pahayag sa teksto, at tinasa ang komunikatibong potensiyal ng mga konseptuwal na metapora batay sa kanilang konteksto, representasyon, diskursibong tungkulin, at mga pamantayan ng epektibong komunikasyong pangkalamidad. Lumitaw sa pagsusuri na ginamit ng mga metapora ang mga source domain tulad ng tao, hayop, digmaan, katawan, pamilya, pagdaloy, at paggalaw upang gawing konkreto at pamilyar ang iba’t ibang dimensiyon ng kalamidad. Gayunman, parsiyal ang bawat konseptuwal na pagmamapa. Habang pinatitingkad nito ang ilang katangian ng hazard, tao, institusyon, pinsala, pagtugon, at pagbangon, maaari din nitong ikubli ang mga kondisyong panlipunan at institusyonal na humuhubog sa bulnerabilidad, kapasidad, ahensiya, kapangyarihan, at pananagutan. Lumitaw rin na hindi likas na nagtataguyod o humahadlang ang metapora sa epektibong komunikasyong pangkalamidad. Nagbabago ang komunikatibong potensiyal nito ayon sa uri at yugto ng kalamidad, inilalarawang aktor, tinig, diskursibong tungkulin, teksto, at literal na impormasyong kasama nito. Mula sa mga natuklasan, bumuo ang pag-aaral ng isang panukalang konseptuwal at komunikatibong balangkas na maaaring magsilbing sistematikong gabay sa responsable at kontekstuwalisadong paggamit ng metapora sa komunikasyong pangkalamidad.

Abstract (English)

This study examined how the tabloid newspapers Pilipino Star Ngayon and Pang-Masa used conceptual metaphors to represent the aspects and actors of the 2013 Bohol earthquake, Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, and the 2020 Taal Volcano eruption, and how these metaphors may promote or hinder effective, inclusive, humane, and responsible disaster communication. The study employed Conceptual Metaphor Theory to identify and analyze metaphorical expressions in the texts and assessed the communicative potential of the conceptual metaphors based on their context, representation, discursive functions, and criteria for effective disaster communication. The analysis revealed that the metaphors drew on source domains such as human beings, animals, war, the body, family, flow, and movement to render different dimensions of disasters more concrete and familiar. However, each conceptual mapping was partial. While metaphors highlighted certain characteristics of hazards, people, institutions, damage, response, and recovery, they could also obscure the social and institutional conditions that shape vulnerability, capacity, agency, power, and accountability. The findings further showed that metaphors do not inherently promote or hinder effective disaster communication. Rather, their communicative potential varies according to the type and phase of the disaster, the actor being represented, the source of voice, discursive function, textual context, and the literal information accompanying them. Based on these findings, the study developed a proposed conceptual and communicative framework that may serve as a systematic guide for the responsible and contextualized use of metaphor in disaster communication.
