Abstract (English)
Climate change remains a critical global issue, driven in part by consumers’ everyday choices that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. In the tourism sector, consumer behavior plays a significant role, highlighting the need for innovative strategies to influence decision-making. One promising approach is green digital nudging, which subtly guides consumers toward desired behaviors without limiting their freedom of choice.
This study explores the effectiveness of green digital nudges within a simulated mobile travel booking app through a two-part investigation in the Philippine tourism context. Study 1 analyzed the motivational factors influencing Filipino consumers’ intention to choose low-carbon travel options using Behavioral Reasoning Theory and PLS-SEM. Study 2 experimentally tested the effectiveness of green digital nudges on simulated travel booking behavior using binary logistic regression, including the moderating role of environmental consciousness and the potential of these nudges to narrow the value-action gap within the experimental context.
Findings from Study 1 revealed that subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and reasons for were significant determinants of intention, while attitude and reasons against were not. Environmental consciousness exhibited direct significant associations with reasons for and attitude. In Study 2, simplification was the most effective nudge in the accommodation booking context, demonstrating consistent significant effects. Default rules were effective only when moderated by environmental consciousness, while framing, social norms, and priming combined with goal setting were not significant. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of facilitating mechanisms, the conditional role of environmental consciousness, and the persistence of the value-action gap within the experimental context. The study offers evidence-based insights on designing culturally sensitive and cognitively accessible green digital nudges that promote pro-environmental behavior in the Philippine tourism context.
