Abstract (English)
This study aimed to examine the effects of the "Hallyu Wave" and Korean popular media on straight, cisgendered Filipino men expressing their masculinity, specifically how it has contributed to the popularization of a new emerging form of masculinity—soft masculinity. Twelve participants underwent semi-structured interviews; two participants for the pilot study and ten for the final research. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was then employed to uncover themes. Through this, eight superordinate themes emerged: (a) Discovering Korean popular media; (b) The pandemic boom of the Hallyu Wave; (c) Generational gaps and differences; (d) Perceptions of masculinity vs. reality; (e) The real me; (f) Taking care of myself; (g) It all starts at a young age; and lastly, (h) The “New Age Man.” In conclusion, the consumption of Korean popular media has left its mark in redefining masculinity—popularizing the emerging soft masculinity among its consumers. Korean popular media is slowly but surely dismantling the rigidity of hegemonic masculinity, allowing men to openly express their true selves with little to no repercussions toward a healthier and better version of themselves.
