Abstract/Summary

The Roman Catholic Church is one of the most influential institutions in the Philippines, especially in politics. Roman Catholics make up most of the voter turnout in elections and are historically participative in political activities (Batalla & Baring, 2019). This study focused on determining the correlation between religious identity and political participation, and which among the five core dimensions of religiosity by Huber (2012) predicts the political participation of Filipino Catholic youth. Using hierarchical regression analysis, only the intellectual core dimension of religiosity predicts political participation. While religious identity showed a nonsignificant correlation with political participation. However, religious identity negatively predicts political participation when dimensions of religiosity are included. Catholic youths who are knowledgeable about Catholic teachings are more likely to participate actively in political actions, and individuals who frequently exhibit religious norms such as praying, attending church, and being involved in religious communities are more likely to be politically active. Exploring the core dimensions of religiosity and religious identity in the country is recommended more particularly for Filipino youth.
