Abstract (English)

This paper examines Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight books, a romance fiction series that remains a pop culture icon, but at the same time romanticizes the abusive relationship between two of its main characters. The article argues that the Twilight series fails both morally and aesthetically because it promotes rape culture by romanticizing harmful sentiments regarding violence against women, thereby failing to achieve normatively correct responses towards the latter. Through the use of Noël Carroll’s moderate moralism as a main framework, it claims that the moral defects in Twilight’s promotion of rape culture translates to aesthetic defects because it distorts the correct emotional responses towards the said kind of violence. This is seen in works that prescribe positive responses to morally reprehensible acts and/or sentiments.

Sinusuri ng papel na ito ang mga aklat ni Stephanie Meyer na Twilight, isang sere ng mga kwentong katha sa romance genre na nananatiling sikat sa kulturang pop, ngunit isinasaromantiko ang abusadong relasyon ng dalawang pangunahing tauhan sa naturang kwento. Ipinapaliwanag ng artikulong ito na ang Twilight ay hindi pumapasa sa pamantayang moral at estetiko dahil pinalalaganap nito ang rape culture sa pamamagitan ng pagroromantisa sa mga sentimentong moral na nakapipinsala sa mga negatibong karahasan ng mga kababaihan, kung kaya bigo din ito sa pagkamit ng nararapat na wastong tugon na normatibo sa mga nasabing uri ng karahasan. Gamit ang moderate moralism ni Noël Carroll bilang pangunahing lente ng pagsusuri, ipinagtatanggol ng papel na ito na ang mga depekto sa aspetong moral ng Twilight bunsod ng maling pagtatalakay ng rape culture ay nakakaapekto sa aspeto nitong estetiko dahil sa pagbabaluktot ng mga nararapat na emosyonal na tugon sa nabanggit na klase ng karahasan. Makikita ito sa mga akdang nagbibigay ng positibong tugon sa mga gawain o sentimentong moral a hindi katanggap-tanggap.
