Abstract (English)

Unmet need for family planning (UNFP) describes a situation where women, despite wanting to delay or avoid pregnancy, lack contraceptive use—potentially leading to unintended pregnancies and negatively affecting the health of mothers and children. Despite progress in family planning policies in the Philippines, disparities persist across demographics. This study explores the factors influencing UNFP in currently married and sexually active unmarried women aged 15-49, along with its geographic patterns. Using data from the 2022 Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey, two-level logistic regression with forward selection identified significant individual- and community-level factors, while Moran’s I detected spatial clusters and outliers. Results show that UNFP is significantly higher among Muslim women, those with five or more children, and residents of communities with high childcare burden. Lower odds of UNFP are observed among those in union, older women, and those in the lower and middle media exposure quintiles. Spatial analysis reveals that across provinces, UNFP is not randomly distributed but exhibits distinct geographic patterns, with High-High clusters predominantly located in BARMM and Low-Low clusters in the majority of NCR and parts of Luzon. Notable outliers are NCR District IV with higher UNFP and Zamboanga Sibugay with lower UNFP than neighboring provinces. These results highlight the importance of context-specific interventions that target both individual and community barriers to family planning.
