Abstract (English)

With/out Resolve is a psychological bildungsroman novella, following 17-year-old Kristie Pablo as she visits the Philippines from the outskirts of Clinton, Mississippi. The story navigates through a dramatic transformation of her psyche and connectedness with both sides of her family. Amid the growing tensions of long-buried familial conflicts and her struggles with an identity crisis, it is also illustrated through the abrupt changes in her physical environment: the rough transition from the familiar rural roads and faded road markings to the varying asphalt and uneven roads, and bustling metropolitan. Divided into three main arcs spanning nine chapters, Kristie embarks on a journey to better understand herself and to reunite with her estranged Filipino family during the most turbulent month of her adolescence.

This novella is developed through the author’s own experiences, shaped by Virgilio Enriquez's Kapwa Theory and her relatives’ decision to leave the Philippines in search of a better life outside the country. There are few diasporic stories that captured the psychological substance of a young teenage perspective, as opposed to their adult counterparts which are plenty. The confusion that comes with yearning for familial intimacy is one that is underrepresented in this subgenre and what the author reconciles with this novella. Through With/out Resolve, the experiences and learnings of the author reinforced Kristie’s world that grew wider under the weight of her familial conflicts and her displaced sense of home.

Ang With/out Resolve ay isang sikolohikal na bildungsroman na nobela tungkol kay Kristie Pablo na 17-anyos pa lamang sa pagpunta niya sa Pilipinas habang siya ay palabas ng Clinton, Mississippi. Ang kuwento ay dadaan sa isang dramatikong pagbabago ng kanyang pag-iisip at koneksyon sa magkabilang panig ng kanyang pamilya. Sa gitna ng lumalalang tensyon mula sa matagal nang pag-aaway sa pamilya at ng kanyang krisis sa identidad niya, ipinapakita rin ito sa pamamagitan ng biglaang pagbabago sa kanyang pisikal na kapaligiran: mula sa pamilyar daan sa bayan at kupas na marka sa kalsada, patungo sa magkakaibang aspalto at baku-bakong kalsada, at malaking bising-busy na metropolitan. Hinati sa tatlong yugto na sumasaklaw sa siyam na kabanata, nasisimulang mas maunawaan ni Kristie ang sarili niya at muling makasama ang pamilya niya sa Pilipinas sa pinaka-magulong buwan ng kanyang kabataan.

Ang nobelang ito ay binuo mula sa sariling karanasan ng may-akda, na hinubog ng Kapwa Theory ni Virgilio Enriquez at ng desisyon ng kanyang mga kamag-anak na lisanin ang Pilipinas upang makabagong buhay sa ibang bansa. Iilan lamang ang mga kuwentong na may kaugnayan sa diaspora na nakapagtala ng sikolohikal na pananaw ng kabataan, kumpara sa napakaraming kuwento sa perspektibo ng mas nakakatanda. Ang kalituhan na dulot ng lubos na kagustuhan na makisama sa pamilya ay isa sa mga hindi gaanong naipapakita sa genre na ito at ito ang nais i-diskubre ng may-akda sa nobelang ito. Sa pamamagitan ng With/out Resolve, ang mga karanasan at natutunan ng may-akda ay ang nagpapatibay sa mundo ni Kristie na lalo pang lumawak sa bigat ng suliraning ng kanyang pamilya at ng kanyang paniniwala kung saan siya talaga siya tutuloy.
