Abstract (English)

The nature of the reality show genre exists within a dichotomy of reality and fiction, which is negotiated through the manufacturing of reality through the editing and production of the show and the performances of the contestants. This dichotomy allows the further examination between the “reality” of the show and the “real” circumstances of the participants and how the show’s narratives and realities are constructed. Sparks Camp, the first boys love (BL) dating reality show in the Philippines, allowed for a more intricate look into the expression of queerness among Filipino male queer individuals as they express their stories through different segments, activities, and attributes of the reality dating show format. I analyzed the various segments of the show, production decisions, and the overall engagement of contestants through queer and gender theories such as Judith Butler’s Performativity and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s notion of the “closet” and “visibility.” Through these theories, I found that the show demonstrates the behavior of society towards queerness and what they deem an acceptable and digestible form of queerness in contemporary Philippine society. Using Michel Foucault’s ideas of heterotopia, I discussed how the show and the camp became its form of heterotopia for the campers and how leaving it affected the different relationships. Alongside the show, I looked at the other media produced about the show to enrich and support my analysis, including relevant interviews and vlogs.
