Abstract (English)
“The Patron Saints of Everything” is a collection of 5 short stories, all in the first person homodiegetic and postcolonial point of view. Each story follows a different protagonist reckoning with their Filipino identities and the negative feelings that come about. The collection aims to tackle issues like colonial mentality and the way it affects our perceptions of our ethnic background, such as colorism, internalized xenophobia, and isolation/alienation by exploring the thoughts and actions of each protagonist, as well as their interpersonal relationships with family and/or friends and how that affects their perceptions of their identity.
Each story open discussions around these issues by using elements of satire and encourages its readers to understand their own relationships with their identities as Filipino, and how it affects their perceptions of both themselves and their fellow Filipinos.
