Abstract (English)

Addiction is the result of a body’s desire to continue consuming a substance or anything that gives pleasure. This leads to different behavioral changes that affect the person and the people around him. Shot Glass: A Collection of Poems is a creative project containing 50 poems designed to explore various areas of the effects of alcohol addiction towards an alcoholic. These areas include the alcoholic’s control over his emotions, and behavior not only towards himself but also against his family. The entire collection does not exclusively revolve around the alcoholic as the main persona. Thus, the 50 poems are divided into four sections or perspectives: Mother, Eldest Child, Father, and Youngest Child. The personas in this collection offer their distinct individual expressions regarding the matter of addiction; how they cope with the situation, what they think, and how they feel. By allowing this exploration of perspectives, the project offers itself as an agency for catharsis not only for the readers, but also for the poet. This approach also intends to broaden the outlook on a traumatic environment, and how people perceive its external factors. Each section composes 12-13 poems written in the first-person point of view to help readers capture a sense of involvement in the poems’ setting and to further allow better creative immersion. The poems in this collection are in free verse with different forms that allow versatility in exploring each persona’s thoughts and stories while granting the readers an array of writing styles.
