Abstract (English)

Big City Girl Evangeline: Monsters in the City is a five-short-story collection following the coming of age adventures of the titular character, 18-year-old Evangeline, and her encounters with the supernatural after moving to Metro Manila from the province. Each story ranges from a minimum of 2,000 to a maximum of 7,500 words and centers on Evangeline’s experience with a supernatural creature. The titles are as follows: The Kapre of Magsaysay St., Bleed Me Dry, The Nuno of the Condominium, The Sirenas of the Bay, and Ate Ella Comes to Manila. Each respective narrative will focus on how these supernatural creatures, whose roots are set within the rural narrative, can be displaced and adapted into the urban setting. The themes tackle those found in Filipino society, such as queerness, environmentalism, forced migration, rampant urban development, and other Filipino experiences or realities. The primary demographic for this collection would be young adults.

Following the tradition of Philippine mythology literature in the Philippines, this collection takes inspiration from various sources. Among them is Severino Reyes’s Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, which is one of the earliest works in this genre. Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo’s Trese comic series places Philippine mythology in Manila’s criminal underworld. Chikiamco Paolo’s Alternative Alamat: An Anthology: Myths and Legends from the Philippines speculates on alternative takes on Philippine mythology and their narratives.

Abstract (Filipino)

Ang mga pamagat ay ang mga sumusunod: The Kapre of Magsaysay St., Bleed Me Dry, The Nuno of the Condominium, The Sirenas of the Bay, at Ate Ella Comes to Manila.
