Abstract (English)
“When The Bells Ring” is a collection of seven interconnected Young Adult short stories that all focus on teenagers’ lives, specifically those who are following the Christian Faith. It depicts both the praising and the wrestling, the messiness of life and relationships, and one’s daily walk with God. It all starts inside an Anglican-Episcopalian Church, a denomination under the Protestant Faith, and branches out to different stories that will deal with topics like broken family dynamics, grief, love, pain, complicated relationships, sickness, mental health and the body, the Chinese culture’s effects on a person’s upbringing and discipleship in the church. Rarely will someone say that this life of faith is easy, but nobody has shown what it really means; most literature with Christian themes is either instructional or critical of organized religion or of God. Instead of just sharing what one has learned through a hard trial or the consequences of an action, as is usual in Christian devotionals, this thesis aims to put the reader in the shoes of a teenager to show the walk of faith. Instead of being moralistic, these stories will talk about life inside the church, so that readers can see that those inside the church are also imperfect, yet united by a collective love for Christ. Overall, the stories could be for any Christian or non-Christian interested in learning what goes on inside a church, as these stories will be slice-of-life rather than aiming to preach. It will show that ultimately the church is not just a simple building, but a place where we all journey together.

Ang “When The Bells Ring” ay pitong maikling kwento na naka pokus sa mga buhay ng kabataan o “Young Adults,” partikular na yaong mga sumusunod sa pananampalatayang Kristiyano. Ipinapakita nito ang pagpupuri at pakikipagbuno, ang magulo ng buhay at mga relasyon, at ang araw-araw na buhay ng isang tao kasama ang Diyos. Nagsisimula ito sa loob ng isang Anglican-Episcopalian Church, isang denominasyon sa ilalim ng Pananampalatayang Protestant, at sa iba't ibang kwento na tatalakayin ang mga paksa tulad ng sirang dinamika ng pamilya, pagluluksa, pag-ibig, sakit, komplikadong mga relasyon, sakit, mental health at ang katawan, ang epekto ng kulturang Tsino sa pagpapalaki ng isang tao sa simbahan. Bihira lamang may magsabi na madali ang buhay na may pananampalataya, ngunit walang sinuman ang tunay na nagpapakita kung ano ang ibig sabihin nito; karamihan sa panitikan na may temang Kristiyano ay o panuto o kritikal sa organisadong relihiyon o sa Diyos. Sa halip na ibahagi lamang kung ano ang natutunan ng isang tao sa pamamagitan ng matinding pagsubok o ang mga kahihinatnan ng isang aksyon, gaya ng karaniwan sa mga debosyonal na Kristiyano, layunin ng tesis na ito na mailagay ang mambabasa sa kalagayan ng isang kabataan upang ipakita ang paglalakbay sa pananampalataya. Sa halip na maging moralistiko, ang mga kuwentong ito ay tungkol sa buhay sa loob ng simbahan, upang makita ng mga mambabasa na ang mga nasa loob ng simbahan ay hindi rin perpekto, ngunit pagbubuklod ng isang kolektibong pag-ibig kay Cristo. Sa pangkalahatan, ang mga kuwento ay maaaring para sa anumang Kristiyano o di-Kristiyano na interesado sa pag-alam kung ano ang nangyayari sa loob ng simbahan, dahil ang mga kuwentong ito ay magkwekwento lamang ng pang araw araw na buhay at hindi sermonya. Ipapakita nito na sa huli, ang simbahan ay hindi lamang isang simpleng gusali, kundi isang lugar kung saan tayo ay naglalakbay nang magkakasama.
