Abstract/Summary
Micro and small food service businesses are at risk during crisis situations, especially in a crisis-prone area like the Philippines, given that their resources offer a small buffer to work around. With this, the study aims to determine whether a crisis management team, frugal innovation, quality of communication, and transformational leadership is able to indirectly affect crisis resilience with the mediating effect of crisis adaptability for food service MSMEs in Metro Manila. As such, the researchers conducted a survey (N=100).
Using Multiple Regression and bootstrapping, the study found (1) quality of communication (p = 0 .007) and transformational leadership (p < .001) have a significant positive effect on crisis adaptability, (2) crisis management team has a significant negative effect on crisis adaptability (p=0.024), (3) crisis adaptability has a significant positive effect on crisis resilience (p< 0.001), and (4) the results for frugal innovation are deemed to be statistically insignificant. Overall, having all four independent variables in a firm significantly improves food service MSMEs’ crisis adaptability, and consequently their crisis resilience in times of difficulties. With these results, the study recommends the food service MSMEs to improve in quality communication, invest in crisis management teams, and practice transformational leadership to be more adaptive and therefore more resilient in times of crises.
