Abstract (English)

In consideration of the efforts of different Philippine institutions to mitigate COVID-19’s repercussions on business industries and workers, this Exploratory-Descriptive Qualitative (EDQ) study investigated the impact of a four-day Compressed Work Week (CWW) on the Work-Life Balance (WLB) and Job Performance of Filipino Employees. Semi-structured interviews and self-report surveys were administered to 17 participants to obtain insights into their experiences, behavior, and perceptions under the CWW schedule and its implications. Thematic analysis, correlational analysis, and review of related literature were conducted to have triangulated conclusions. The findings indicated that the CWW had a positive impact on WLB and its facets namely social situation, working conditions, economic aspect, and physical and mental well-being. Employees reported having more quality time with family and friends, balanced work environments, reduced expenses, and improved well-being. Both the resulting WLB of employees and the direct characteristics of CWW consequently had positive impacts on employee job performance and its specific facets namely task performance, contextual performance, adaptive performance, and counterproductive work behavior. Employees were found to be more productive, have more opportunities to initiate tasks, have more time to upskill and be less inclined to absences. Possible implications for business management and recommendations to projected stakeholders have also been identified to contribute valuable knowledge that can be used for policy-making, strategic planning, and informed considerations aimed at improving employee well-being and job performance. Future researchers may explore the effects of other unconventional work arrangements on the WLB and the performance of employees in the Philippines.
