Abstract (English)

Participation in organized collegiate sports activities have become increasingly popular among students due to the several physical and psycho-social benefits. However, sports injuries have become an unfortunate, yet inevitable part of a student-athletes’ career. The Expectancy-Value Theory suggests that there are two primary factors that affect an individual’s choice, persistence and performance, namely, expectancy for success and task values. In an effort to add a local set of data pertaining to reasons student-athletes have for returning to sport after severe injury, and supply additional information that will allow us to apply this framework and it’s elements theoretically and practically to a student-athletes’ experience, this research aims to explore De La Salle University - Manila UAAP athletes’ experience in returning to sport after sustaining severe sports-related injury - specifically, to determine the values that the student-athletes ascribe to their respective sports as demonstrated in the Expectancy-Value Theory. An exploratory research design and qualitative research methodology that used a semi-structured interview guide was specifically used to explore the student-athletes’ persistence during the rehabilitation period and investigate the factors that affect their commitment to return to sport after sustaining a severe injury that will result in at least one-month loss of physical participation. Thematic data analysis was used to explore the values that the student-athletes ascribe to their respective sports as demonstrated in the Expectancy-Value Theory.
