Abstract (English)

Manggagamburwig ng mga Pagkakataon (Thieves of Opportunities) is a documentary photo essay consisting of 30 photos, introductory texts, and captions. This photo essay highlights a narrative on the lives and livelihood of coconut farmers, agricultural workers, and their families in Sariaya, Quezon Province, Philippines. This includes their lifestyle, culture, struggles, and challenges, such as food security, income and labor issues, land reform, education, and their demand for the proper utilization of ₱113.88 billion assets with ₱76.4 billion cash of coco levy funds for the development of the coconut industry.

This photo essay aspires to provoke a conversation on the impact of misused and slow utilization of coco levy funds on the development of the coconut industry in the Philippines. It aims to raise awareness not only on the struggles and issues of the coconut farmers and agricultural workers, but also on the intergenerational opportunities they missed over time. According to Ms. Ma Victoria Alonso and Mr. Ladislao Magmanlac, "Ang manggagamburwig ay mga taong umaakyat sa mga puno ng niyog kapag gabi at nagnanakaw ng mga bunga." (The word, “Manggagamburwig”, means people who climb coconut trees at night to steal the coconuts). Thus, Manggagamburwig ng mga Pagkakataon is a story of stolen and missed opportunities that the coconut farmers, agricultural workers, and their families experienced and are experiencing every day.
