Abstract (English)

This thesis aims to recontextualize jeepney artistry within the contemporary landscape, amidst the looming threat of disappearance, as the Public Transport Modernization Program seeks to replace traditional jeepneys with modernized vehicles. To document and preserve the cultural practice of jeepney art, the authors developed Patok: Sining ng Kalsada, a web zine featuring a digital gallery of jeepney art and articles highlighting the contributions of jeepney artists, digital artists, and industry professionals. Through an open comments section and a submission form, the web zine also provides a participatory space that fosters a community supporting jeepney artistry.

This study was conducted in three phases: pre-production, production, and post-production, allowing for a structured yet flexible process for data collection and analysis. The researchers employed convenience sampling, selecting participants based on geographic proximity, ease of access, and availability. Participants’ insights and experiences were gathered through semi-structured interviews, thereby fostering an organic and in-depth understanding of jeepney artistry.

Through a thematic analysis of the interviews with participants and the web zine’s analytics, findings reveal that there are still jeepney artists who actively produce these works of art, inspiring others who have not yet engaged in the practice. This allowed the capacity of jeepney artistry to transcend its traditional canvas and expand into other digital media forms, such as typography and publications. Furthermore, participants also stated openness to the continued study and exploration of jeepney art, highlighting its enduring relevance and potential for further research. Overall, the study underscores jeepney art as a defining feature of Filipino arts and culture.

Layunin ng tesis na ito na muling ilagay sa konteksto ang sining ng jeepney sa kasalukuyang panahon, sa harap ng banta ng pagkawala nito dahil sa ipinatutupad na Public Transportation Modernization Program, na naglalayong palitan ang tradisyonal na jeepney ng mga modernisadong sasakyan, tulad ng e-jeepneys. Upang itala at pangalagaan ang kulturang sining ng jeepney, binuo ng mga manunulat ang ang Patok: Sining ng Kalsada, isang web zine na nagtatampok ng digital na galeriya ng mga makukulay na jeepney at mga artikulo na nagbibigay-diin sa kontribusyon ng mga jeepney artists, digital artists, at mga propesyonal sa industriya. Sa pamamagitan ng mga tampok na artikulo at bisywal na nilalaman, nagbibigay rin ang digital na magasin ng espasyo para sa partisipasyon sa pamamagitan ng bukas na seksyon para sa mga komento at feedback forms para sa pagsusumite na mga tampok na personalidad, paksa, at tema kaugnay sa sining ng jeepney, na nagtataguyod ng aktibong pakikilahok.

Dahil dito, nagkaroon ng kakayahan ang sining ng jeepney na lampasan ang tradisyonal nitong canvas at lumawak patungo sa iba pang anyo ng digital media, tulad ng tipograpiya at mga publikasyon. Bukod pa rito, sinabi rin ng mga kalahok ang kanilang pagiging bukas sa patuloy na pag-aaral at eksplorasyon ng sining ng jeepney, na nagbibigay-diin sa pangmatagalang kahalagahan nito at sa potensyal para sa karagdagang pananaliksik. Sa kabuuan, binibigyang-diin ng pag-aaral ang sining ng jeepney bilang isang natatanging katangian ng sining at kultura ng Pilipino.
