Abstract (English)
Ípit, Piít explores the silenced realities that women face when dealing with abortion. Despite its criminalization, over one million Filipinas undergo induced abortions each year, confined in unsafe and isolated conditions, where the probability of death and long-term complications is high. In the Philippines, women’s reproductive health has been an overlooked matter, and the short film aims to delve into this issue, highlighting the current illegal online market that sells abortion pills.
Shot in a single take and confined in one location, the film follows Isay, a 23-year-old virtual assistant, who unexpectedly discovers that she is pregnant. Trapped by her responsibilities as a breadwinner, the unreliability of her partner, and the rigorous demands of her work, she realizes that anything can now be accessed online as she buys abortion pills through a social media platform. The film underscores how women like Isay are compelled to find ways to survive in the absence of safe and legal support. This shows how systemic neglect and social stigma force women into isolation and unsafe practices.
Grounded in intersectional feminism, reproductive justice, and framing theory, the project sheds light on women's reproductive health, showing how women’s lived experiences are shaped by poverty, patriarchal structures, and cultural stigma. Ípit, Piít aims to provoke dialogue in the said discourse and reimagine a future where women no longer need to hide just to survive.
