Abstract (English)

This study focuses on Lunas Collective (LC), a Filipino, feminist, psychosocial organization that communicates care as a first-approach to survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). We identified emotions to be a crucial element in sustaining the organization, particularly, how the principle of compassion is translated on the characteristics, culture, and practices of the organization. Compassion, defined as an emphasized awareness, emotional focus, and active presence for those in trouble, distress, trauma, or any other form of suffering (Figley & Ludick, 2017), was explored in the context of LC as they compassionately communicate with their volunteers and in turn, how their volunteers enact these understandings of compassion through their interactions with clients, referred to as Service-Users (SUs).

Guided by the works of Miller (2007) and Way and Tracy (2012) and their discussions on the Compassionate Communication framework, the study looked into the communication practices of LC and their manifestations in the subprocesses of noticing, connecting, and responding. In response to the research questions and research objectives, the study employed four (4) research methods: Semi-structured Interviews, Focus Group Discussion, Content Analysis, and Field Observation. Consequently, this study was able to present new information with regards to the subprocesses of noticing and responding in terms of its manifestations in LC which have not been discussed by the guided literatures, and claims that this non-linear framework anchors on Dialogic Reflection Communication Style as the communication practice present on all three subprocesses entailing a continuous and sustainable cycle of communicating care.
