Abstract/Summary

Ang Alamat Ni Prinsesa Puri Magdangal tackles the everyday sexism encountered by Filipino women, as told through the conventions of the fantasy and musical genres. According to the Philippine Commission on Women, there is a prevailing “culture of silence” Filipino women are inclined to succumb to in the face of abuse and violence, which is arguably apropos to the societal expectations they are burdened with as well as the disproportional amount of emotional labor (pakikiramdam) they undergo to appease colleagues, loved ones, and strangers. With this, the film intends to raise the question of how this facet of our culture affects young Filipino women, who, in their formative years, may begin to face such realities, ranging from gossip, societal expectations, and harassment. The film ultimately aims to invite its middle to late-adolescent female audience to recognize their raw emotions as a means to empower themselves to live authentically, regardless of others’ expectations and ill intentions. The musical short feature primarily comprises five original songs written in Filipino, incorporating intratextuality through recurring verses and motifs. The songs outline the protagonist’s encounters that mirror different types of microaggressions received by women. For the fantasy elements of the film, most of the story is narrated by an anonymous narrator and is structured as if it were a children’s storybook. The songs were recorded beforehand to retain the audio quality, while some of the dialogues were recorded live.
