Abstract/Summary

Sweet Eighteen explores the repercussions of a global pandemic on the well-being of young adults. It highlights the power of social support across different generations among individuals facing mental health challenges, fostering empathy and collective awareness to increase efforts towards prioritizing mental health in our post-pandemic society. The short feature offers a heartfelt perspective into the adolescent experience during the COVID-19 pandemic as the protagonist navigates from a place of depression to one of hope through her grandmother's guidance. The two characters forge a deep bond through shared traditions like baking, bridging generational differences with warmth and resilience.

The short film’s duration of 16 minutes ensures a comprehensive exploration of the chosen themes and an in-depth examination of the characters' experiences through the mental health challenges during the pandemic. Existing literature, news articles, and studies related to depression, anxiety, intergenerational relationships, and the mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic–particularly among young adults–were analyzed to provide a theoretical foundation for the narrative and themes addressed in the short film. The project was written, produced, and edited in a span of four months. It began with gathering information on young adults’ pandemic experiences and the therapeutic role of baking to inform the scriptwriting process, followed by three days of filming in March 2024.
