Abstract/Summary
In many aspects of Philippine society, people identify being a “male” or “female” as a standard distinction for gender (UNDP and US AID 15). Bringing more light to the lived experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community, the focus of this research was to further look into the prejudice against transgenders that hinders their desire to lead on a bigger scale and be change-makers in society.
Ganda ka? Ganda ka! is a documentary that aims to open the minds of its audience to raise awareness on what actions can be taken to make our society more inclusive to the LGBTQIA+ community. This was enacted through Elle Aspilla as a representative figure of the trans community in this documentary. Ganda ka? Ganda ka! followed Elle’s journey during her campaign to be a kagawad in the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Sto. Tomas in Biñan City, Laguna. Following the results of the elections, other important events of Elle were also filmed such as her speaking engagements and the 2024 Laguna Gay Queen pageant screening. Incorporating the Affirmative Model of LGBT Leadership Enactment by Fassinger, Shullman, and Stevenson and the Framing Theory, the researchers, who are also the producers of the documentary, analyzed how Elle Aspilla’s identity as a transwoman affected her familial relationships, leadership endeavors, and her other means of pushing for her LGBTQIA+ community-related advocacies. The researchers were also able to identify three of the most pressing challenges that transwomen leaders like Elle go through and determined possible sources of motivation to overcome discrimination against transwomen leaders. With these sources of motivation, a number of ways to amplify LGBTQIA+ advocacies were also recognized and can be deduced from the documentary.
