Abstract/Summary

Within the Walls: The Evolution of Philippine Graffiti in Three Different Generations talks about how our urban walls often go unnoticed, perceived as mere surfaces. Yet, a group of gifted artists embraces the transformative power of these seemingly ordinary canvases. Philippine graffiti, a dynamic and ever-evolving force, defies convention. It is a legitimate art form firmly rooted in the cultural landscape, contrary to misconceptions of vandalism. The journey of graffiti began from ancient human expressions which eventually evolved in New York City around the late 20th century. Graffiti has transcended over time, becoming a potent vehicle for artistic expression.

At the heart of this narrative lie luminaries of Philippine graffiti. Jayo Flipone, known as "Flip-One," stands as a guardian of an ancient Filipino language through the use of his graffiti. Flip-One's art embodies freedom and resilience, coupled with a vibrant fusion of hip-hop and skateboard culture, representing his cultural identity. Bvrn MNL adds a contemporary twist to this narrative, transforming his home with a style pioneered by him and his group: Burning. Bvrn's generation breathes fresh life into graffiti, leveraging collaboration and connecting with each other through art. The narrative continues with Le Su, who takes graffiti into the realm of digital art and even toys. Le Su's evolution as an artist is a testament to the ever-changing landscape of graffiti, no longer confined to its traditional form but evolving into a multi-dimensional platform.

Philippine graffiti challenges preconceived notions. It is an evolving art form that has transformed landscapes. It is a fusion of culture and artistic innovation. It continuously remains a potent vehicle for self-expression and societal reflection.
