Abstract (English)

During the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, the agricultural lands in the surrounding provinces were covered in ashfall. Considering that more than thirty-five years have passed, vegetation in the surrounding highland areas of Mt. Pinatubo has recently started to increase. However, early local research on the area states that the exchangeable elements as nutrients for plants were highly varied in volcanic soil. Given this diverse landscape, this study compared the proximate composition and mineral concentrations in green leafy vegetables (GLVs) – bok choy (Brassica rapa subs. Chinensis), nalta jute (Corchorus olitorius), and red-stemmed malabar spinach (Basella rubra) – grown in non-volcanic soil (NVS) and volcanic soil (VS). The proximate compositions were determined by using standard AOAC methods, while mineral concentrations were identified by using atomic absorption spectroscopy techniques. The research revealed that GLVs grown in volcanic soil yielded significantly higher crude protein content (p< 0.05) in bok choy and nalta jute compared to those grown in non-volcanic soil. While carbohydrate content in bok choy was significantly higher than those from non-volcanic soil. As for the mineral analysis, results showed that calcium concentrations across all of the GLVs were consistently significantly higher in volcanic soils. On the other hand, red- stemmed malabar spinach was found to have significantly higher magnesium concentrations in non-volcanic soil. While for potassium, all GLVs had higher nutrient concentrations from volcanic soil. Lastly, it was observed only in bok choy that there was a significantly higher iron concentration from volcanic soil. This was explained by understanding the potential plant growth conditions such as 1) the concentrations of exchangeable cations available, 2) heavy metal interferences, 3) soil pH influence, 4) nutrient antagonism in macrominerals, and 5) physiological acquisition systems of plants.
