Abstract/Summary

This study reports the utilization of natural clays as dispersants for natural plant dyes to make face paint formulation. More specifically, this study explores the pigment-dispersing ability of three types of clays: kaolinite, montmorillonite, and mica, in paints. A series of experiments was likewise conducted to determine the optimum pigment:binder:clay ratio in the paint formulation. These tests were conducted in triplicate samples. The following optimized formulations based on pigment-binder-water-clay mass ratio for beetroot powder, ternate pea powder, and turmeric powder, respectively, were as follows: 1.0:3.1:6.0:0.9; 0.5:3.5:6.0:0.5 and 1.0:2.5:6.0:0.5. Furthermore, the results revealed that montmorillonite, in the presence of glycerin as an additive, is the most effective dispersant in the paint formulations leading to the best observed color properties, viscosity and ease of application of the final face paint formulation.
