Abstract/Summary

The Lamiaceae family of plants, present in many countries such as the Philippines, is widely acknowledged for their traditional medicinal uses in rural areas and have gained commercial recognition globally due to their numerous therapeutic properties. This is attributed to the presence of biologically active compounds which contain various pharmacological effects and properties that have been shown to be beneficial for human health. This research aimed to conduct a narrative synthesis of the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory bioactivities of Lamiaceae plants that are found in the Philippines, with a specific focus on their secondary metabolites. A narrative synthesis of 24 relevant articles was conducted, identifying 51 Lamiaceae plant species for evaluation. The findings suggest that flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids and terpenoids are the dominant secondary metabolites present in Lamiaceae plants. Their structural and functional properties were analyzed to understand their roles in conferring antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. The presence of a hydroxyl group, inhibition of the cytoplasmic membrane integrity of bacteria, and the inhibition of Nf-kb were the similar characteristics from the secondary metabolites that may suggestively be linked to the synergistic correlation of both bioactivities. The results of this study have significant implications for the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries as it provides valuable insights into potential drug discovery.
