Abstract (English)

The Philippines supports high avifaunal biodiversity, with many bird species depending on the ecological integrity of their habitats. Despite this, no formal studies have documented bird communities in the vicinity of the Br. Alfred Shields Ocean Research Center in Lian, Batangas, Philippines. This study aimed to establish a baseline assessment of bird species in two distinct habitats in the area, a beach forest and a grassland, using the point-count method for data collection. A total of 118 individual birds representing 14 species, 13 families, and 6 orders were recorded in the beach forest habitat. In the grassland habitat, 114 individual birds were observed, representing 24 species, 20 families, and 7 orders. All species recorded were classified as Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List. Diversity analysis using the Shannon-Wiener Index and Simpson’s Index yielded values suggesting moderate bird species diversity in our study areas. Differences in species richness and composition were also identified, with a Czekanowski Coefficient and Squared Euclidean Distance (SED). Observed ecological influences on avifaunal presence included weather disturbances, nearby development human activity, and vegetation characteristics. The continued presence of both generalis and more sensitive bird species suggest that these habitats retain key ecological functions despite surrounding urbanization. These findings underscore the importance of regular biodiversity assessments to monitor potential shifts in species presence and habitat conditions, and to guide informed conservation strategies in coastal and semi-urban ecosystems.

Ang Pilipinas ay nagtataglay ng mataas na antas ng avifaunal biodiversity, kung saan maraming species ng ibon ang umaasa sa ekolohikal na integridad ng kanilang mga tirahan. Sa kabila nito, wala pang pormal na pag-aaral ang nagdodokumento ng mga komunidad ng ibon sa paligid ng Br. Alfred Shields Ocean Research Center sa Lian, Batangas, Pilipinas. Layunin ng pag-aaral na ito na magtatag ng paunang pagtatasa ng mga species ng ibon sa dalawang magkaibang uri ng tirahan sa lugar—isang gubat sa baybayin at isang damuhan—gamit ang point-count method para sa pangangalap ng datos. Naitala ang kabuuang 118 indibidwal na ibon na kumakatawan sa 14 na species, 13 pamilya, at 6 na orden sa gubat sa baybayin. Sa damuhan naman, naobserbahan ang 114 indibidwal na ibon, na kumakatawan sa 24 na species, 20 pamilya, at 7 orden. Ang lahat ng naitalang species ay may klasipikasyong Least Concern batay sa IUCN Red List. Ang pagsusuri sa pagkakaiba-iba gamit ang Shannon-Wiener Index at Simpson’s Index ay nagpakita ng mga halagang nagpapahiwatig ng katamtamang antas ng pagkakaiba-iba ng mga species ng ibon sa mga lugar ng pag-aaral. Natukoy din ang mga pagkakaiba sa kasaganaan at komposisyon ng species gamit ang Czekanowski Coefficient at Squared Euclidean Distance (SED). Kabilang sa mga naobserbahang salik na ekolohikal ang mga pagbabago sa panahon, malapit na kaunlarang pantao, at katangian ng mga halaman. Ang patuloy na presensya ng parehong pangkalahatang uri at sensitibong species ng ibon ay nagpapahiwatig na pinananatili ng mga tirahang ito ang mahahalagang tungkuling ekolohikal sa kabila ng pag-urbanisa sa paligid. Binibigyang-diin ng mga natuklasang ito ang kahalagahan ng regular na pagtatasa ng biodiversity upang masubaybayan ang mga pagbabago sa presensya ng species at kondisyon ng tirahan, at upang maging gabay sa matalinong estratehiya ng konserbasyon sa mga baybaying at semi-urbanong ekosistema.
