Abstract (English)
Academic tasks such as exams, presentations, studying, and classes give rise to different emotions in students, from positive ones like hope, pride, and enjoyment to negative ones including anger, boredom, and anxiety. These academic emotions can either support or undermine students' physical well-being, influencing aspects like physical fitness, nutritional intake, sleep habits, and immune function. This qualitative study explores how academic emotions influence physical well-being from the perspective of Filipino College of Science students. Specifically, the paper also explores the academic emotions experienced by the students related to their academic activities, identifies physical manifestations they experienced from academic emotions, as well as their perceived effects of these emotions to their physical well-being. Through thematic analysis of focus group discussion data, findings reveal that academic emotions arise as responses to academic demands, shaping one’s motivation, self-perception, engagement, behavior, and physiological changes. Moreover, the six themes that emerged from the results are: academic emotions being context-dependent and shaped by academic environment, positive emotions emerging from mastery and purpose, pervasive and lingering negative emotions, academic emotions embodied in a student’s lifestyle, students view and believe a balanced wellness is interconnected, and that academic emotions and physical well-being are shaped by cultural and relational contexts. The results further suggest interventions and wellness programs for both students and professors to adapt to a more holistic and supportive academic environment.
