Abstract (English)

Generation Z employees are entering workplaces with evolving expectations regarding authority, leadership, and organizational relationships. This study described the lived experience of Generation Z Filipino employees working in Metro Manila, Philippines, with authority and workplace hierarchy. It examined how they negotiated obedience, autonomy, compliance, and resistance in workplace interactions. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, purposive sampling was employed to recruit 12 Generation Z Filipino employees from various industries in Metro Manila. Data were collected through semi-structured online interviews, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that participants generally favored collaborative, relationship-oriented workplaces where supportive leadership, Filipino cultural values, and respectful workplace interactions shaped how they navigated authority and developed a sense of organizational belonging. In contrast, more hierarchical leadership styles were often associated with less favorable experiences, suggesting that collaborative workplace practices and culturally responsive management contribute to more positive experiences of authority and workplace hierarchy. These findings provide insights for organizations in fostering workplace inclusion, employee engagement, and collaborative workplace relationships.
