Abstract (English)
The performance of household labor in single-mother-headed households often challenges traditional gender norms, requiring sons to take on domestic responsibilities typically associated with women. This study examines how childhood experiences of household labor among adult fathers raised in single-mother-headed families of orientation influence their performance of household labor and the quality of their family relationships in their own families of procreation. Guided by Gender Value Theory, this qualitative research explores how family characteristics, single mothers’ personal characteristics, and perceptions of fairness in labor division shape fathers’ household labor participation and family dynamics. Using a descriptive-exploratory research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 adult fathers from the National Capital Region, Philippines, who were raised by single mothers. Through thematic analysis, the study found that fathers who were actively involved in household tasks during childhood were more engaged in household management within their families of procreation, fostering a home life that was perceived as fair and cooperative. The findings highlight how the division of household labor in single-mother-headed families shapes sons’ understanding of gender roles and influences their relationship-building with their partners and children, emphasizing the evolving perspective on gender roles and its impact on family dynamics.
