Abstract (English)
This study investigates how gambling, as an institution, operates as a socially stratified institution in Philippine society. As such, it mirrors and reproduces the current class divisions, particularly in the urban context of Metro Manila, wherein a wide range of socioeconomic classes thrive. This study is sociologically anchored on Max Weber’s multidimensional model of social stratification. It looked at how people across the tiers of low-end, mid-level, and high-prestige gambling experience negotiated their gambling experience based on their class positions. A qualitative exploratory research design was followed, wherein 14 in-depth interviews were conducted by the researchers with players who lived in Metro Manila’s various areas. These participants represented different occupations, income brackets, and motives for engaging in gambling. The findings have shown a deep connection to social hierarchies in everyday life in the metro: low-end gambling tends to be communally intimate but is subject to moral lapses; the mid-level group has shown an ambiguous position where access is broad but experiences and realities are varied, subject to their social positions and realities; while high-prestige has remained dominant in exclusivity and wealth in all gambling forms, serving as a spectacle of privilege and aspiration. Meanwhile, across these tiers, the participants reported that they have been influenced by peers, media, and individualized conditions that made gambling normalized as recreation and coping. In the end, the study concludes that gambling is not just a vice or entertainment but an institution that reinforces and reflects social inequality embedding itself in the taken-for-granted social class system.
