Abstract (English)

The study explored how Filipino blue-collar worker (BCW) parents perceive their facilitation of their children’s intergenerational social mobility (ISM), particularly upward mobility through achieving higher education. While existing literature on ISM in the Philippines often emphasizes economic inequality and low socioeconomic status (SES), few studies explore how parents navigate these challenges to support their children’s mobility. Using a qualitative research design, the study conducted twelve (12) semi-structured interviews with BCW parents in urban communities within Luzon who currently or previously held blue-collar jobs, and had at least one child enrolled in or graduated from college. The analysis highlights dimensions such as parents’ socioeconomic background, parental agency, psychosocial attitudes, and children’s perceived upward mobility. Findings revealed that despite limited educational attainment and blue-collar work, BCW parents showed strong aspirations for their children to pursue higher education. Through strategies such as financial management, shared decision-making, and consistent emotional and educational support, BCW parents fostered their children’s educational success and upward mobility as seen in improved lifestyle conditions, higher educational progression, and expanded career prospects. Overall, the study demonstrated that the intentional efforts of BCW parents contribute to interrupting the cycle of intergenerational transmission of poverty, reaffirming the critical role of education for upward mobility in the Philippine context.

Ang layunin ng saliksik na ito ay matuklasan ang pananaw ng mga Pilipinong magulang na blue-collar worker (BCW) tungkol sa intergenerational social mobility (ISM) ng kanilang mga anak, partikular sa pag-angat na nakabatay sa pagtamo ng mas mataas na antas ng edukasyon. Bagama’t maraming pag-aaral sa Pilipinas ang nakatuon sa ISM sa konteksto ng kakulangan sa pinansyal at mababang socioeconomic status (SES), kulang ang mga pag-aaral ukol sa karanasan ng mga magulang upang mapagtagumpayan ang mga hamong ito at suportahan ang pag-unlad ng kanilang mga anak. Gumamit ng kwalitatibong disenyo, kung saan ginawa ang semi-structured na panayam sa labindalawang (12) magulang na kasalukuyan o dating nagtatrabaho bilang BCW, na kabilang sa kabihasnan sa Luzon, na mayroong isang anak na kasalukuyan o nakapagtapos na sa kolehiyo. Tinalakay ang mga dimensyong: parents’ socioeconomic background, parental agency, psychosocial attitudes, at children's perceive upward mobility. Sa pamamagitan nito, sa kabila ng limitadong edukasyon at hanapbuhay, ang mga magulang ay nagpamalas ng matibay na adhikain para sa kanilang mga anak upang ituloy ang pagtatapos ng kolehiyo. Kabilang sa mga kaparaanan ay ang maingat na pamamahala sa pinansyal, pagdedesisyon, at patnubay sa pag-aaral upang maipamalas ang kanilang suporta sa mga anak.
