Abstract (English)

This study examines how the varying forms of social control influence women’s reproductive agency and decision-making, in the Philippine context where cultural conservatism and moral expectations remain significantly and deeply entrenched to the identity and culture, subsequently making reproductive decision-making and agency a highly contested topic. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive research design, the researchers collected data through semi-structured interviews, interviewing 8 women aged 21 to 25 residing in Metro Manila. Applying the method of thematic analysis, the results revealed that reproductive decisions are shaped by the intersecting influences and facets of religious standards, familial expectations and peer interactions that collectively define what is considered acceptable and moral. Despite these forms of control, the participants pursued to exhibit their agency through their own ways of navigation, by practicing informed decision-making and portraying subtle resistance to the traditional reproductive norms. The findings emphasize that the facets identified, namely familial and cultural expectations, religious beliefs or religion-based morals, life trajectories and legal policies, and general access to information, are significant considerations in reproductive decision-making, acknowledging that it is a continuous process in which women actively negotiate between control and autonomy. It highlights the ways in which self-determination, reflection, and social awareness intertwine to shape their experiences across reproductive turning points.

Sinusuri ng pag-aaral na ito kung paano nakakaimpluwensya ang iba't ibang anyo ng social control sa lipunan sa reproduktibong ahensya at pagdedesisyon ng kababaihan lalo na’t sa konteksto ng Pilipinas kung saan ang konserbatismo sa kultura at mga pamantasang moralidad ay nananatiling nakaugat sa pagkakakilanlan at kultura at ginagawang paksang pinagtatalunan ang pagdedesisyon at ahensya sa reproduksyon. Gamit ang isang kwalitatibong deskriptibong disenyo ng pananaliksik, nakolekta ang datos sa pamamagitan ng mga semi-structured na panayam, na kinapanayam ang walong kababaihan na may edad 21 hanggang 25 na naninirahan sa Metro Manila. Gamit ang pamamaraan ng thematic analysis, ipinakita ng mga resulta na ang mga desisyon sa reproduksyon ay naiimpluwensyahan sa iba’t-ibang aspeto ng mga pamantayang pangrelihiyon, mga ekspektasyon galing sa pamilya, at mga pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga kaibigan kung saan tumutukoy sa kung ano ang itinuturing na katanggap-tanggap at moral. Ipinapakita ng mga kalahok ang kanilang reproduktibong kalayaan sa pamamagitan ng kanilang sariling mga paraan ng pag-navigate, sa pamamagitan ng maayos na pagdedesisyon at pagpapakita ng marahang pagtutol sa tradisyonal na mga pamantayan sa reproduksyon. Binibigyang-diin ng mga natuklasan na ang mga natukoy na aspeto, katulad ng mga inaasahan sa pamilya at kultura, mga paniniwalang pangrelihiyon o moralidad na nakabatay sa relihiyon, mga landas sa buhay at mga legal na patakaran, at pangkalahatang pag-access sa impormasyon ay mahahalagang konsiderasyon sa paggawa ng desisyon sa reproduksyon, na kinikilala na ito ay isang patuloy na proseso kung saan aktibong nakikipag-areglo ang mga kababaihan sa pagitan ng kontrol at awtonomiya. Itinatampok nito ang mga paraan kung paano nagkakaugnay ang sariling pagpapasya, pagninilay, at kamalayang panlipunan upang hubugin ang kanilang mga karanasan sa mga punto ng pagbabago sa reproduksyon.
