Abstract (English)

Social advocacy engagement involves advocating against various issues in social, political, economic, and cultural situations. Disagreements and differing perspectives over these issues can lead to conflict through online shaming on social media platforms. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between social advocacy engagement and online shaming, with social connectedness and social justice attitudes as potential triggers for advocacy. 206 Gen Z Filipinos residing in the Greater Metro Manila Area were surveyed through a non-probability convenience sampling. Four validated scales were used to test the correlation of the variables. Social justice attitudes showed a significant weak positive correlation with all social advocacy engagement domains. Regarding online shaming, the intent to online shame domain had a significant moderate positive correlation with political and social advocacy domain and a significant weak positive correlation with the political awareness domain. However, social connectedness and the remaining online shaming domains were not significantly correlated with social advocacy engagement. The findings suggest that social advocacy engagement of individuals tend to have developed a strong critical consciousness. Furthermore, political awareness leads them to potentially participate in online shaming on people they have moral differences or disagreements with.

Ang pakikilahok sa panlipunang adbokasiya ay tumutukoy sa pagtataguyod laban sa iba’t ibang isyu sa lipunan, politika, ekonomiya, at kultura. Para sa mga Gen Z na Pilipino, ang pag-usbong ng teknolohiya at social media ay nagbigay-daan upang maging mas madali at mas bukas ang ganitong uri ng pakikilahok sa adbokasiya. Layunin ng pag-aaral na ito na siyasatin ang ugnayan ng pakikilahok sa panlipunang adbokasiya at online shaming, na isinasaalang-alang ang social connectedness at social justice attitudes bilang mga posibleng salik na nagtutulak sa adbokasiya. Isinagawa ang sarbey sa 206 na Gen Z na Pilipino na naninirahan sa Kalakhang Maynila gamit ang non-probability convenience sampling. Gumamit ang pag-aaral ng apat na validated scale upang masukat ang lahat ng baryabol. Ipinakita ng resulta na ang social justice attitudes ay may makabuluhang mahinang positibong ugnayan sa lahat ng aspeto ng social advocacy engagement. Sa aspeto naman ng online shaming, nakita na ang intent to online shame domain ay may katamtamang positibong ugnayan sa political and social advocacy domain at may mahinang positibong ugnayan sa political awareness domain. Subalit, walang makabuluhang ugnayan ang social connectedness at ang iba pang domain ng online shaming sa social advocacy engagement. Ipinapahiwatig ng mga natuklasan na ang mga indibidwal na aktibong nakikilahok sa panlipunang adbokasiya ay karaniwang may matibay na moral na paninindigan at paniniwalang pampulitika. Bukod dito, ang mataas na antas ng kamalayang pampulitika ay maaaring mag-udyok sa kanila na makilahok sa online shaming laban sa mga taong hindi nila kaayon sa moral o paniniwala.
