Abstract/Summary

This study proposes to set up an asthma cure-camp, on the basis of the study of the typical emotional and relational problems of 35 asthma patients, in Manila. Specifically, this study aims to find out the emotional and relational problems, those asthma patients suffer from.This study made use of the descriptive research design, using the survey method. The respondents of this study were 35 chronic asthma patients, who had been going for regular treatment to three different hospitals. The researcher constructed a questionnaire to gather information about the emotional and relational problems of asthma patients. Percentages and weighted means were computed for facility of data analysis and interpretation. The study showed that 51 percent of the sample were suffering from emotional problems in the areas of fear, 49 percent in the areas of inferiority feelings, 31 percent in the areas of hatred, 23 percent in the areas of sadness, and 23 percent in the areas of guilt. There were 57 percent of the sample having relational problems with their mothers and 26 percent in their relationship with their father. Based on the results of the investigation about the emotional and relational problems of asthma patients and their willingness to join the treatment program, an asthma cure-camp was proposed. The program is holistic in approach, consisting of group counseling, prayer for healing and breathing exercises. Group counseling was proposed to help reduce emotional and relational problems, prayer to bring about healing and the breathing techniques to strengthen the lungs. Thirty-two (32) individuals or 91 percent had expressed their willingness to join the camp. It is an indication that they want further help, other than the treatment they are receiving from the hospitals.Part II of the study determines the effectiveness of a holistic therapeutic intervention program for eight asthma patients.
