Abstract/Summary

Singlehood is becoming a more viable option among Filipino women today because she has more opportunities available that lead to a purposive delay in marriage. As the role of the woman changes, she faces more complex stresses and issues. These include ambivalence towards singlehood, professional stresses, and stigma. Despite these factors, single women have been found to experience fulfilled lives and display good life satisfaction. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed to explore the character strengths of single Filipino women and explore how these strengths are used to minimize the distresses of singlehood and maximize its advantages. Eleven (11) never-married, voluntarily single women participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews that explored manifestations of character strengths and their impact on well- being. Emerged themes indicate that character strengths are apparent in women’s pursuit of enriching experiences and growth, help provide clarity of the self, foster support systems, provide for adaptive coping, and aid in decision making. In terms of psychological well-being, character strengths were found to impact areas of the self, other people, and engagement.
