Abstract/Summary

Recent Korean immigration in the Philippines has experienced exponential growth. Like other ethnic minority groups, majority of Koreans in the Philippines are self-employed or have set up a business in the Philippines. Many studies have revealed such pattern among ethnic minority groups for the past several decades. However, very few studies have dealt with the actual business performance of ethnic entrepreneurs especially among new and emerging ethnic minority groups like ‘Korean immigrant entrepreneurs in the Philippines.’ Therefore,

with the introduction of the background and motivations for Korean immigration to the Philippines, the study aims to analyze the performance of the three largest industries that Korean immigrant entrepreneurs are engaged in the Metro Manila Philippines (e.g. English Language Institutes, Tour & Travel Agencies, and Restaurants) using a selected company for each of the three industries as case study. The study have proven that the success of Korean businesses in the Philippines is

based on the ‘protected market’ and ‘ethnic enclave’ theory as shown by the performance of the three businesses used in this study namely: a) JABEZ International Education Center Inc., b) MANA Tour & Travel Agency, and c) Cho Ga Jip Restaurant. The study also identified the factors that encourage Korean immigrants to establish a business in the Philippines and that contributes to the success of Korean business in the Philippines. This would include the barriers and the possible factors of opportunities. The explained character and consequences of participation of Korean entrepreneurs in the ethnic business would help new comers to understand the Philippines’ overall investment environment. The data used in this study were collected from the in-depth interview, telephone directories, ethnic newspaper articles, internet articles, and personal observations of the Korean community.
