Abstract/Summary

Solid waste management remains at the forefront of worldwide concern. Generation of solid waste is a foreseeable consequence of production and consumption activities in any economy. Programs need to recognize and incorporate the perspectives and insights of the households and individuals. This study aims to determine the local communities’ attitudes, perceptions and behaviors regarding the disposal of their household solid waste amidst the various socio-demographic factors. Copies of self-administered questionnaire were distributed to systematically selected householders in the municipality of Sulat, Eastern Samar, Philippines. Focus group discussions, solid waste characterizations and situational analysis of the study site were conducted to support survey findings. Correlation analysis determined the factors influencing the householders’ behavior. Results showed that educational attainment, occupation, household income, gender, age, household size and origin, specific environmental attitudes and perceptions are significantly correlated with specific environmental behaviors (P < 0.05). As for predicting individual pro-environmental habits, findings in this study consistently indicated that participation is greatest among those with the highest socio-economic status, meaning high incomes, high levels of educational attainment and employment in prestigious occupations. Furthermore, personal level environmental attitudes and concern best predicts specific pro-environmental behaviors. Findings from this study likewise showed that some specific environmental behaviors of householders are influenced significantly by one’s perception. Various household solid wastes generated everyday on the randomly selected households in the study area were characterized and estimates of the quantity of these wastes generated everyday/ per household (in kilograms) indicated that food and organic household wastes hold the most generated by the community of Sulat.
