Abstract/Summary

The increasing number of Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) is one of the most intriguing issues in the Philippines. Various studies have already presented reasons for a child committed crimes. This qualitative-descriptive study focused on the lived experiences of previous CICL to generate factors on their successful reintegration. Ten (10) individuals who were once a CICL shared their stories and experiences before, during, and after they entered rehabilitation program. Parents or relatives and the social worker of the CICL also shared their experiences and stories about their children. A semi-structured, in-depth interview was conducted to obtain different life stories, used as vignette. Using thematic analysis, it generated themes on the different experiences of these children, parents and the social worker before, during, and after the program. Factors and meaning of successful reintegration were also discussed. Experiences showed differences in several aspects: behavior, relationship, emotions, insights/cognitive processes, living environment, challenges, and coping strategies. Factors that helped in successful reintegration were: support system, renewed faith or spirituality, understanding roles and responsibilities, developed insights and realizations, and continuous monitoring. Successful reintegration is defined as readiness for change for these children, having hopes and dreams for the parents and for these children to be heard for the social worker.
