Abstract/Summary
This study introduced a value education program for the Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) in Taiwan based on the findings from a survey of values of a sample of students, representative of the total population of the school. The study is descriptive in nature. The subjects of the study were 30% of the total population of SHHS of the school year 1979-1980. By a process of random sampling, 298 students were given the value survey and questionnaire. Two sheets of value survey (Rokeach, 1973) and a questionnaire indicating individual's value choice in real life situations were used in this study. The data gathered from the ranking list of value survey were treated in the following way: for the measurement of central tendency, the median was used while for testing of statistical significance of values between male and female students, the median test was used. For the comparison of three groups such as three years level and different religions groups, the extension of the median test was used to determine the statistical significance of the students' values. For the data of the questionnaire, frequency and percentage distribution were used for purposes of analysis and interpretation. The following conclusions were drawn from the study: 1. The values common to the students were: wisdom, family security, inner harmony as their common goals of life (terminal values) and broadminded, honest as common means of reaching the goals of their life. 2. There was a great deal of similarity in the values of students according to sex, year levels and religion. 3. In the choice of values in real life situations, the students revealed they have the same pattern of choices. Their choices were mainly self-centered. 4. With these findings in mind, the values education program was designed.
