Abstract/Summary
This project paper was conducted to determine the applicability of Problem-based Learning in teaching General Science to Grade 8 students of Southville International School and Colleges based on the teacher and students’ perceptions. The research design used was descriptive which is exploratory in nature. The instruments used were the ill-structured problems, the rubrics for students’ evaluation of PBL implementation and students’ self and peer evaluation, students’ journal reflections and the teacher’s interview. The results yielded: a) favorable overall mean rating for the PBL implementation evaluation of students and also a highly favorable rating from the teacher based on the interview responses; and b) highly favorable overall mean rating from both the students’ self and peer evaluations. The results of the study showed that both the students and the teacher find the PBL approach effective in enhancing the students’ inquiry, research and problem solving skills. The students also appreciated the kind of learning that deals with real-life issues. The use of PBL approach in teaching General Science to grade 8 students of Southville International School and Colleges was effective and therefore can be adopted as one of the strategies the teacher can use for teaching the course.
