Abstract/Summary

The purpose of the present study was to determine and to probe the understanding and the existing misconceptions among third year high school students of Antipolo National High School, Antipolo City, after instruction on the topic “Solutions”. These concept proficiency and the common misconceptions among students were determined through the development of a Chemical Concept Inventory on Solutions. This Chemical Concept Inventory on Solutions was composed of 16-item open ended questions to diagnose students understanding and misconceptions of subject content knowledge based on students’ reasoning ability. An interview methodology was done through random sampling by unstructured questions for documentation. The researcher was able to identify the level of conceptions and the following misconceptions among students on Chemical Solutions: Difference between Molarity and Molality, Preparation of Solution, Dilution, Fators Affecting Solubility, Polarity and Density of the Substance. This present study was based on the previous research done by Mulford, (1996). It was found out that there were many students who hold misconceptions based on the result of the study which occur during the process of instruction. Further studies on students’ proficiency and misconceptions not only on chemical solutions were recommended.
