Abstract/Summary

This study sought to find out the teachers' attitudes toward and participation in the guidance program in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China during the school year 1988-89. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the teachers' attitudes toward the guidance program in their school? 2. Are teachers' attitudes toward the guidance program significantly related to the following factors: age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, and length of teaching experiences? 3. What in the perception of the teachers are problems that affect the implementation of the guidance program? 4. What is the extent of teacher's participation in the current guidance program in their school? The subjects consisted of 240 fulltime senior high school teachers of Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China during the school year 1988-89. The data gathering devices of this study were an attitude scale consisting of 40 statements which elicited either favorable or unfavorable attitudes of the teacher respondents and two checklists to assess the effect of the problem met in the implementation of the guidance program and the teachers' participation in the current guidance program. The research hypothesis tested by the study was that there is a significant relationship between the teachers' attitudes toward guidance program and the following factors: age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, and length of teaching experience. Pearson Product-moment correlation statistical analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The computed mean was used to assess the extent to which the problems affected the implementation of the guidance program in their school.

The salient findings of the study are the following: 1. Generally, the teachers showed favorable attitudes toward the guidance program, with two hundred and twenty two or 92.5 percent of the teachers registering favorable attitudes. 2. There is a significant relationship between the teachers' attitudes and their age, sex, and length of teaching experience, but the correlation coefficient was low. 3. There is no relationship between the teachers' attitudes and their civil status, educational attainment, and participation. Based on the mean rating, 17 problems cited in the checklist affected the implementation of the guidance program slightly, and only 49 percent of the teachers actually participated in the current program. From the results of the study, the main recommendations are presented here below: 1. An in-service education program must be organized and conducted in all areas and at all levels periodically to promote and improve the understanding of guidance, attitudes, and skills among professional staff. 2. An appropriate orientation to guidance program be given to new comers at the beginning of the scholastic year. 3. Cooperation and interaction is needed among counselors, teachers, administrators, parents, communities in order to improve the guidance program in the school. 4. The results of this study should be utilized as basis for enrichment and revision of the existing guidance program in Hsinchu Senior high schools.
