Abstract/Summary

The study re-introduces N.V.M. Gonzalez as a postcolonial critic. His key ideas in postcolonial criticism can be conceptualized in the critical matrix, consisting of three categories: Agency, History, and Orality. N.V.M.’s postcolonial criticism is shaped by his theoretical influences, primarily romanticism and formalism. However, he extends the boundaries of these domains of thought and reveals their points of juncture in the formation of his critical paradigm. N.V.M.’s theoretical deliberations can be situated alongside the frameworks of local and foreign postcolonial critics. On the other hand, there are points of difference, precisely because of the distinctiveness of the Philippine context. N.V.M. provides alternative models of understanding the Philippine postcolonial situation as well as alternative tools of analysis in Philippine postcolonial studies. Hence, in the same way that postcolonial criticism, as theorized by local and foreign thinkers, can be utilized to elucidate N.V.M.’s framework, his key ideas provide fruitful openings to understanding the issues central to postcolonial criticism, particularly in the Philippine context.
