Abstract/Summary

This paper relies heavily on the two surveys conducted by the writer. The first survey intends to as certain the levels of the reading abilities and the reading problems of the first year high school students of Xavier School. The second survey records an attempt to discover the student's interests. From these surveys, the writer wishes to determine the type of reading materials "that will be most helpful in encouraging the students to raise their respective reading levels. The writer hopes that her paper will serve as a practical guide. It intends to reveal what has been accomplished as well as what more can be done toward furthering and guiding the students' reading development. This study deals with the identification of present reading abilities, deficiencies, and interests. It also includes a suggested course of action for the improvement or reading skills 01 the first year high school students under study.
