Abstract/Summary

The primary aim of this study is to establish a well-organized guidance and counseling program for St. Francis Girls High School, to meet the demands of the students in this contemporary or modern world. Five questions were raised: 1) What are the needs and problems of the students at St. Francis Girls High School? 2) Are teachers and students in favor of an organized guidance program? 3) Do the members of the staff see the need of an organized guidance program in the present set-up of the school? 4) What type of organizational set-up would make the program truly functional? 5) What guidance services can meet the expressed needs and problems of the respondents?

The respondents of this study are fifty percent of the school student population and the Included also were the high school staff members. Two separate questionnaires were used in this study, one for the students and one for the teachers. The one for the students was adapted from Sangalang's questionnaire to elicit the problems and needs of students. The questionnaire for the teachers aimed to find out whether the teachers felt the need for organizing a guidance program.

The results of the problem checklist and the questionnaire for teachers and students were tabulated. In this study, only frequency counts and percentage distribution were used for purposes of analysis and interpretation.

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) From the survey as revealed by the problem checklist, the students face different kinds of problems, such as health, social-psychological relations, personal psychological relations, sex and morals, vocational, studies and financial problems. 2) Based on the needs and problems gathered in the survey, the following guidance services are proposed: a) Individual analysis b) Counseling service c) Testing service d) Information service e) Placement service f) Evaluation service. 3) The full support and active involvement of the principal, the teachers, the counselors, librarian, secretary and all the members, in the implementation of the program will guarantee its success.
