Abstract/Summary

Rapid Assessment on Hazards, Safety and Sustainability (RAHSS) was conducted in Sorsogon for 105 buildings. The use of free and available tools such as PHIVOLCS Fault Finder, PHIVOLCS Hazard Hunter, FEMA P-154 Rapid Visual Seismic Screening, Wind Checklist and Sustainability LEED Checklist were utilized well. The collected data were processed into Microsoft Excel. RAHSS does not quantitatively indicate if a building is safe or not due to ground shaking, severe typhoons, and other hazards. The present survey aims to create an inventory and assessment in order to have a reference on which buildings are hazard-prone area and need extensive evaluation, assessment, re-design, and possible re-construction partially or totally. From the PHIVOLCS Hazard Hunter and Fault Finder tools, the ground shaking and flood hazards that are more likely to affect a building were identified. Hazard assessment recognizes the importance of the location of the building in assuring safe designs due to earthquake, flood and wind hazards. Buildings located near fault line or in tsunami and flood prone areas are recommended to have designs that are resilient to such hazards. Based from the result of RVS FEMA P-154 Rapid Visual Seismic Screening and a wind checklist, there are only 2 government buildings out of 105 that got poor scores and will be required for detailed assessment. The evaluation of LEED Checklist results have led to a conclusion that there are three deficiencies that are present in majority of the buildings that have undergone inspection. These are Water Efficiency, Sustainable Sites and Energy and Atmosphere. This study having utilized FBBD company’s projects and others have provided basis for the company in evaluating their construction and design methodologies. The case study had a positive impact on the company, as they are now able to determine which type of buildings are prone to extreme hazards and what are the factors that contribute to their vulnerability. The company seeks to improve their services in building plan and construction by adapting this simplified means of determining the status of their projects likewise the company is now able to anticipate important factors that may affect their services thus further mistakes can be avoided.
