Abstract/Summary

The transportation system in rural areas tend to get overlooked by the government, compared to that of urban areas. In this study, the assessment of transportation system of the island province of Marinduque, Philippines was looked into, focusing on the travel mode choice of its residents. This study intends to fully investigate the travel mode choice of residents in Marinduque in achieving their daily tasks and fulfilling specific needs (i.e. jobs, schools, healthcare, among others) by taking into account all the important factors such as the demographic data, mode ratings and the level of accessibility experienced by the travelers. The necessary data were collected through a series of data gathering throughout the province. Data from survey questionnaires, initial inspections and Local Government Units were obtained. The 218 barangays in the province were grouped into a total of 65 zones following a condition that adjacent barangays with homogeneous land uses were combined. The computed adequate sample size of 1103 was equally divided among these zones. Data analysis of the perception on the use of transport modes and the level of accessibility were then carried out. The results show that the transport mode that is rated the lowest considering the attributes is “Habal-habal’. Additionally, it was observed that the accessibility levels for schools and workplace destinations are better compared to that of markets and hospitals. It was also evident that those who live near the Marinduque Circumferential Road have better accessibility as compared to those who are far from it. Furthermore, the travel mode choice was analyzed using R-programming language. There are eight (8) mode choices that were used in the data analysis. Modeling scenarios show significant changes in the mode share percentages occurred. The mode walking greatly decreased for the workplace destination once the transport mode attributes and the accessibility are improved. Additionally, increasing income shows a significant increase in the percentage mode share of private modes, especially private motorcycles.
