Abstract/Summary
The study determines the effectiveness of multimodal counseling in assessing and solving the problems of a slow learner across the seven modalities of the BASICA ID (Behavior, Affect, Sensation, Imagery, Cognition, Interpersonal Relationships and Drugs). The study made use of the N of 1 design. Data were obtained from a number of sources. These included interviews, conferences, observations, psychological tests and the counselee's records/charts on behavior and academic performances. Data obtained served as the basis for drawing up the proposed treatment strategies. The counselee's problems identified across the BASIC ID were a) Behavior - laziness in studying and excessive playing of basketball with friends b) Affect - none c) Sensation - dizzy spells due to eye problem d) Imagery - none e) Cognition - unfavorable attitude towards studying f) Interpersonal Relationships - none g) Drug - poor eating habits. The corresponding treatment strategies for problems identified were a) Behavior - contingency contracting and positive reinforcement b) Sensation - wearing of eye-glasses c) Cognition - bibliotherapy and d) Drugs - doctor's prescription. The treatment proved beneficial to him. He was able to give time to his studies and cut down on his playing basketball with friends. The counselee's dizzy spells were lessened. His attitude towards his studies improved. Dietary habits of the counselee also improved. The treatment was not totally effective along the behavior mode. While he was able to devote more time to his studies, he still failed a number of subjects. In view of the gains realized by the counselee, it was concluded that multimodal behavior therapy can be applied to slow learners.
