Abstract/Summary

This study obtains indices of the reliability and usefulness of peer ratings of teaching competency and efficiency of the faculty members of La Salette College in Santiago, Isabela. It investigates how peer ratings correlate with the administrator's teaching efficiency ratings of the same faculty members. This study is a descriptive investigation which employs correlational treatment to determine the usefulness of peer evaluation. Twenty full time instructors of La Salette College were evaluated by two groups of raters: peers and administrators. The La Salette College evaluation form was employed in obtaining the peer and administrator ratings of teaching efficiency. The instrument covers 24 items categorized into three general areas with a 1-5 scale for each area. The statistical techniques employed in the study included 1)group method which is calculated from peer and administrator's ratings. 2) Spearman rank method of correlation for determining the degree of association of area by area ratings. 3) Pearson Product Moment. The present investigation has brought out the findings that peer ratings can be indicators of teaching efficiency. In the light of the findings, the following conclusions have been drawn: 1) There was a positive relationship between the general average ratings of the peer and the administrators. 2) There was positive relationship between the peer and administrator's ratings of those qualities and skills considered essential in teaching. 3) The relationship is insignificant though positive between the itemized ratings of the peers and administrators and the general estimates ratings given the teachers. However, relationship between peer rating of performance of routinary responsibility and general estimate is highly significant. 4) The estimate ratings of the peers and the administrators correlate positively but insignificantly.
